The flawed First Past the Post electoral system means that huge numbers of voters were faced with an unfair choice at this week’s local elections: to see their vote essentially count for nothing, or to vote tactically in order to block their least preferred party. All because the party they support could not win in their area.

That’s why we need to Sort The System. If you haven’t already, click here to join us on Wednesday 24 May to tell MPs it’s time for Proportional Representation. But before you do that, read on for all the latest MVM news.

At our hugely popular ‘Get Set’ online rally to build momentum for Sort The System held on Tuesday 18 April, we heard from senior politicians and leading figures from across the democracy movement about why mass lobbies like Sort The System are important – and why now is the time!

If you missed it, a recording of the event is available on our website.

PITCH FOR PR – MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

Thank you to the dozens of supporters who have been sending in their 30-second ‘pitches for PR’.

Whether you’re already attending Sort The System, haven’t decided yet, or can’t make it, we’re encouraging as many supporters as possible to record and share a short video showing why they think we need PR.

Make your video personal, passionate and concise and upload them to our Google folder here (or send them via email to sortthesystem@makevotesmatter.org.uk). T’s and C’s below.*

GRASSROOTS GAINS

In the run up to the local elections, we distributed posters to more than a thousand people across the UK, to show local candidates that PR is not only popular, but also a doorstep demand.

The more Councillors elected that are supportive of electoral reform, the more chance we have of making all votes count equally.

Thank you to everyone who has asked their local candidates to back the Pledge For PR, displayed a window poster, or talked to canvassers about PR!

Meanwhile, MVM local groups have been taking the conversation on electoral reform to streets across the country, with busy street stalls held in April from Cambridge to Bristol, Warrington to London.

A big shout out also goes to MVM Oxford for organising a highly successful event on PR earlier this month with Oxford West MP Layla Moran and MVM’s own Klina Jordan. You can watch it back here.

If you’d like to get involved with a local group near you, but don’t know how, please email local@makevotesmatter.org.uk.

ALLIANCE FOR PR

It was great to meet up so many with fellow PR enthusiasts at ‘The Big One’, Extinction Rebellion’s demonstration in Parliament Square.

MVM organised a panel with XR Youth on the links between climate action and electoral reform to a large audience including long-time MVM supporters and people completely new to the movement for PR.

Our thanks to Deputy Leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski AM, Indra Adnan from The Alternative Global, and Frances Foley of Compass for taking the time to join us and help promote Sort The System.

On Wednesday 17 May, that’s one week before the lobby, MVM is delighted to be teaming up with Unlock Democracy for our upcoming event, ‘In Conversation with Carla Denyer’.

A leading voice on environmental and social justice issues, Carla will be sharing her views on how we can create a modern democracy and restore the public’s faith in our politics. Click here to find out more.

MVM’s work to make votes match seats is only made possible by the commitment of our supporters, and the generosity of our monthly givers, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you so much for standing with us.

*In sending us your 30-second pitch for PR, you are consenting to Make Votes Matter using your video on social media and in any way to promote the Sort The System event and for future purposes to help the campaign for Proportional Representation.
