Hundreds of activists participated in more than 20 events organised by our local groups and volunteers around the country, as part of our Democracy Action Weekend on 4-6 July. Others made their voices heard in other ways: for example by writing to the press or to their elected representatives, or expressing their support online.
When we first announced our Democracy Action Weekend, we set ourselves the goal of reaching 100,000 new people with a message about the need to change the voting system. At the time, this goal seemed ambitious.
We´ve just crunched the numbers, and the figures well exceed our expectations. According to our estimates, we´ve reached well over 500,000 new people with our message.

This figure includes:
More than 30 press articles and other media coverage, reaching an estimated 250,000 people.
Around 250,000 new individual users who saw social media content about the weekend, including this Rolling Stone interview with Billy Bragg watched by over 100,000 people, where he talks about rally.
15,000 leaflets printed and given out by our activists.
Let’s be clear: this is a very conservative estimate. There is so much that it doesn’t include: for example, every person who saw a poster in the street or in a local business; everyone who saw one of our rallies or other actions while passing by, every conversation that our supporters had with their friends and family, or every piece of content shared in WhatsApp chats. It’s possible that as many as two million people heard about Proportional Representation in the lead-up to and during the Democracy Action Weekend.
What´s more, our social media content is still being shared, and new articles keep appearing in the media reporting on the actions organised by our local groups.
Thank you again to everyone who contributed, in any big or small way, to the Democracy Action Weekend. We’re incredibly proud of everything you’ve achieved. Together, we can end First Past the Post for good.
