All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections

Working alongside L4ND and LDER, we supported Fair Vote in building one of the largest All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) in Parliament. In January 2026, Make Votes Matter became co-secretariat of the APPG for Fair Elections, working in partnership with Unlock Democracy.

The APPG for Fair Elections brings together parliamentarians from across the political spectrum to strengthen the health, integrity, and fairness of UK democracy.

At a time when public trust in politics is low, many people feel they have little influence over the decisions that shape their lives. The APPG exists to address this challenge by identifying practical, cross-party solutions to ensure UK elections are fair, transparent, and representative.

Our Focus

The APPG focuses on three interconnected areas that are critical to the quality of UK democracy:

1. Fair Votes

We examine how the UK’s electoral system translates votes into seats, and explore pathways towards a system where:

• Votes count equally
• Election outcomes more accurately reflect how people vote

2. Money in Politics

We scrutinise the rules governing political finance, with a focus on:

• Greater transparency in political donations
• Closing loopholes that allow undue influence
• Strengthening oversight and enforcement

3. Information and Democracy

We assess the impact of the modern information environment on elections, including:

• The spread of disinformation
• The role of digital platforms
• Whether current regulation is fit for purpose

Our Approach

The APPG is committed to:

• Cross-party collaboration – working constructively across political divides
• Evidence-based policy –  drawing on research, expert insight, and public engagement
• Practical reform – focusing on achievable changes that can command broad support

We bring together parliamentarians, academics, civil society organisations, and campaigners to build consensus around reforms that can strengthen UK democracy over time.

Our Work

Through inquiries, events, and our annual report, the APPG highlights key challenges and develops actionable recommendations. These include:

• Establishing a national commission to explore electoral reform
• Improving transparency and enforcement in political finance
• Strengthening safeguards against disinformation in elections

Why It Matters

Free and fair elections are the foundation of a healthy democracy. Ensuring that votes carry equal weight, that money does not distort political outcomes, and that voters can make informed choices is essential to rebuilding trust in UK politics.
