Today Andy Burnham officially became the new leader of the Labour Party. On Monday he’ll be sworn in as Prime Minister – our fifth in four years.

Over and over again, First Past the Post gives power to governments most people didn’t vote for, poisons our political culture, and breeds instability.

The situation is only getting worse. The next general election could deliver a majority government with under 30% of the vote. This is democracy on the brink.

For years, Burnham has been an outspoken advocate for electoral reform. Last year, he described Proportional Representation as an “idea whose time has come”. He has criticised Westminster’s winner-takes-all culture and called for a more collaborative politics.

Now is his time to show that he means it.

That’s why, together with our friends at Compass and Unlock Democracy, we have launched an open letter, calling on Andy Burnham to make electoral reform a priority. We’re asking him to show his commitment to democracy by setting up a National Commission on Electoral Reform within his first 100 days in Number 10.

It’s time to put an end to Britain’s decade of chaos and implement a fair voting system where every vote counts.
